09:57 am [Link]	Crawford County... ...is on fire. Actually, it's been raining since last night, so maybe it isn't anymore. But yesterday was all fire. Big plumes of smoke out towards Grayling, fire engines on our road for the first time since I don't remember when, I-75 all over the news. When I was seven, there was a similar forest fire, close enough to our house that we started piling things in the car in case of evacuation. Mom was packing up photo albums and heirlooms and things. I had my little red Snoopy suitcase. Pretty much the only thing I remember grabbing, in dire fear of losing, was my little plastic Big Bird. I have no idea why. It wasn't my favorite toy or anything. It's a weird memory, the more I think about it. I remember seeing the sky full of flames, but that's not possible. It didn't end up actually coming that close. I think I remember translating the sunset into fire, because the purpose of a child's imagination is to torture that child. Anyway. This is gettling all rambly and disjointed and all I really intended was to let anyone downstate who's watching the news know that I'm not on fire. 02:41 pm [Link]	Deja vu politics, deja vu injuries. Pat Buchanan, always very much a voice of reason, has weighed in on Obama's speech. My favorite part: "First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known." WAIT WHAT I'M SORRY WHAT? Oh my God. ~ Aaaand Mom got in touch with me from work today to tell me that she slipped on the ice in the parking lot, and sprained her wrist, which is now in a brace identical to mine. Come on, this is just getting ridiculous. I think that's the first time Mom and I were cracking up over a hurt family member. So we're now one away from a fully matched/braced set. Watch out, Erin. 10:43 am [Link]	We all float down here. Things we didn't need science to tell us: Children hate clowns. "We found that clowns are universally disliked by children. Some found them quite frightening and unknowable." Although I'm not sure I'd call 250 people "universal", that's a great quote. Frightening and unknowable indeed. This reminds me of the Law & Order special episode of Celebrity Jeopardy awhile back. Sam Waterston and Chick From CI Which Nobody Cares About both picked very good, helpful charities. Fighting disease and helping the impoverished and all. Christopher Meloni's pick? Hospital clowns. He chose to donate thousands of dollars not towards helping sick children, but towards traumatizing them. Bravo.
